Biography of Tommy Flanagan
Tommy Flanagan was an American jazz pianist renowned for his sophisticated, lyrical playing within the bebop and hard bop traditions, initially influenced by Art Tatum and Bud Powell. His early career in New York included performing on milestone recordings such as Sonny Rollins's Saxophone Colossus (1956) and John Coltrane's Giant Steps (1959), where his elegant touch contrasted with the music's complexity. He is perhaps best known for his long tenure as Ella Fitzgerald's pianist and musical director from 1968 to 1978, after which he led a series of acclaimed trios that solidified his reputation as a masterful bandleader.
