Biography of Roland Hanna
Roland Hanna was an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator, renowned for his sophisticated style that masterfully blended a deep classical technique with the swing and improvisation of jazz, making him a versatile artist who excelled in settings from solo piano to big bands. A graduate of the Juilliard School, his distinguished career included work with legends like Benny Goodman and Charles Mingus, a pivotal eight-year role in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and co-founding the New York Jazz Quartet. In 1970, he was granted an honorary knighthood by Liberia for humanitarian concerts and dedicated his later years to teaching as a professor at Queens College's Aaron Copland School of Music.
