Biography of Ralph Sutton
Ralph Sutton was an American jazz pianist celebrated as one of the greatest masters of stride piano to emerge after World War II, faithfully and powerfully continuing the tradition of his idols Fats Waller and James P. Johnson. His career was launched in 1941 when he was recruited by trombonist Jack Teagarden and solidified by an eight-year residency as the intermission pianist at Eddie Condon's famed New York club. For over 50 years, he performed globally, was a founding member of the all-star World's Greatest Jazz Band, and left a legacy as a peerless soloist with a powerful two-handed technique.
