Biography of Mulgrew Miller
Mulgrew Miller was an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator who grew up in the gospel and blues traditions of Mississippi before a transformative television performance by Oscar Peterson at age 14 set him on his path in jazz. He built a formidable reputation as a consummate sideman and pianist with a soulful, swinging style, touring and recording with the bands of jazz giants like Betty Carter, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and Tony Williams. An influential bandleader with over 15 albums of his own and a respected educator, he served as director of jazz studies at William Paterson University and was, as noted in a biography on his official site, considered "not only a gifted pianist but also an influential educator and mentor to younger generations".
