Biography of Monty Alexander
Monty Alexander (born 1944) is a Jamaican-American jazz pianist celebrated for his unique and vibrant synthesis of American jazz traditions with the rhythms of his Caribbean heritage, including reggae, calypso, and mento . Discovered in 1962 by Frank Sinatra's friend Jilly Rizzo, he became the house pianist at the famed New York club Jilly's and has since enjoyed a prolific international career, performing over 20 times at the Montreux Jazz Festival and collaborating with icons from Ray Brown to Natalie Cole . Ranked among the top jazz pianists of all time, he has been honored with Jamaica's Order of Distinction and Order of Jamaica for his global promotion of the island's music .
