Biography of Lennie Tristano
Lennie Tristano was an American jazz pianist, a major figure of cool jazz, and a profoundly influential teacher. A child prodigy who was totally blind, he formed a noted sextet in the late 1940s whose recordings, including "Intuition" and "Digression," are considered the first free group improvisations in jazz, predating the free jazz movement by a decade. He spent much of his later career focused on teaching, mentoring a generation of musicians including saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh.
