Biography of James P. Johnson
James P. Johnson was an American pianist and composer, widely celebrated as the "Father of Harlem Stride Piano," whose sophisticated, orchestral piano style in the early 1920s marked the crucial evolution of ragtime into jazz . He wrote the iconic Roaring Twenties anthem "The Charleston" and his 1921 recording of "Carolina Shout" is considered the first jazz piano solo on record, a piece that became a required test for all New York pianists . A foundational influence, he was the teacher and inspiration for Fats Waller and his innovative techniques directly shaped the playing of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Art Tatum .
