Biography of Hampton Hawes
Hampton Hawes was an American jazz pianist celebrated as a foundational and self-taught figure in the West Coast bebop and hard bop movements, whose playing fused the rhythmic drive of Charlie Parker with the harmonic ideas of Bud Powell into a clean, swinging, and soulful style. His commercial and critical peak came in the mid-1950s with a series of acclaimed trio and quartet albums for Contemporary Records that established him as a leading pianist of his generation. Hawes documented his dramatic life and profound insights into the bebop era in his award-winning autobiography Raise Up Off Me (1974), which is regarded as one of the most honest and compelling jazz memoirs ever written.
