Biography of Gene Harris
Gene Harris was an American jazz pianist celebrated as a foundational figure in soul jazz, best known for leading The Three Sounds, whose warm, blues, and gospel-inflected style made them one of Blue Note's top-selling acts throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. After a semi-retirement in Boise, he was persuaded to return to touring by bassist Ray Brown in the early 1980s, leading to a successful second act where he recorded extensively for Concord Records and earned a Grammy nomination for his album Tribute to Count Basie. His groove-oriented, accessible piano style, described as "immediately likable and predictably excellent," directly influenced later generations of pianists, including Monty Alexander and Benny Green.
