Biography of Earl Hines
Earl "Fatha" Hines was an American jazz pianist and bandleader regarded as a foundational architect of modern jazz piano, pioneering a revolutionary "trumpet style" of playing horn-like single-note lines with his right hand. His groundbreaking late-1920s collaborations with Louis Armstrong produced timeless classics like "West End Blues," and he led a celebrated big band at Chicago's Grand Terrace for over a decade. A profound influence on pianists from Art Tatum to Oscar Peterson, his adventurous technique and rhythmic freedom earned him recognition as the "first modern jazz pianist".
