Dave Brubeck (1920–2012) was an American jazz pianist and composer, a foremost exponent of cool jazz celebrated for his groundbreaking experiments with unusual time signatures and polyrhythms, most famously on his 1959 album Time Out. The album, featuring Paul Desmond's iconic composition "Take Five," became the first jazz LP to sell over a million copies and introduced jazz to a vast new audience through extensive college tours.
